Summer holidays are a time for children to have fun, rest and relax.
But how do we make sure that children keep “ticking over” during the long summer break without opening a text book.
Below are some ideas of fun learning ideas for the summer holidays which are educational and fun to keep those little brains ticking over. They can be adapted depending on age and level.
On A Plane Or At the Airport
- A perfect chance to look at a map and learn capital cities and names of countries.
- Arithmetic games by using the Duty Free magazine: “If I buy 3 bottles of Easyjet’s Mango Madness juice at £2.50 each and a pack of Space Raiders for £1.20, how much change do I get from £15”
- Games and problems using time. “If I leave Heathrow at 8:30am and my flight is 2 hours 50 minutes long, when do I arrive in Nice if France is 1 hour ahead of UK?”
- Currency problems: “If I get £0.80 for 1 Euro, how many pounds do I get for 10 Euros? (excluding Travelex’s commission)”
- Multiplication problems: “If RyanAir’s check-in allowance is 0.5kg per person, what is the maximum that a family of 8 people can check in?”
On the Beach
- Adding and subtracting games by using shells
- Go on a “beach hunt” to collect various objects and then try and order them by weight and length
- Games using buckets of water: how many small buckets of water do I need to fill a large bucket? This will help with volume and capacity problems
Long Car Journeys
- Time / Distance/ /Speed questions: “If Dad is driving at a constant rate of 80kph, how far will we all travel in 5 hours (assuming Dad doesn’t take a break)”
- Percent problems: “If Mum has 20 Oreos and George eats 80% of them, how many Oreos are left for Georgina?”
- Division problems: “Europcar offers a Renault Scenic for 15 Euros a day. If we rent it for 30 days how much do we need to pay Europcar?”
